REQUIREMENTS AND PREFERENCES The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for Equipment Operator, Senior (Highway Bridge and Maintenance Division).This job announcement will remain open until sufficient applications are received and may close at any time.OverviewThe Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division (HBMD) maintains and improves the County's roadway system, operates and maintains drawbridges, and oversees mosquito control operations. HBMD is responsible for cleaning and mowing rights-of-way, street patching and resurfacing, intersection improvements, canal maintenance and construction, guardrail maintenance, bridge maintenance, street cleaning, and storm-water drainage improvements.This position requires skilled heavy construction equipment operation involving the maintenance and repair of streets, bridges, and related components such as sidewalks, bridges, guardrails, and drainage system improvements. The ideal candidate has experience in construction, must be able to safely operate large construction equipment and trucks and be proficient in the use of some of the following construction equipment: bulldozer, backhoe, front-end loader, skid-steer loader, gradall excavator, excavator, vacuum truck, industrial street sweeper and other construction equipment as assigned. Additional duties include completing daily paperwork and work-orders.Must show proficiency on all assigned pieces of equipment within six (6) months of employment.General DescriptionPerforms skilled work and supervision in the operation of large vehicles.Works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.Minimum Education and Experience RequirementsRequires two (2) years experience operating heavy construction equipment in a maintenance environment such as a bulldozer, backhoe, front-end loader, skid-steer loader, gradall excavator, excavator, vacuum truck or industrial street sweeper.Special Certifications and LicensesMust possess and maintain a valid FloridaCommercial Driver's License for duration of appointment.Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Class B Commercial Driver's License for duration of appointment.Preferences*Associate's or Vocational degree in heavy equipment operation, or closely related field.*Bachelor's Degree in relevant field.*State of Florida issued Class 'A' Commercial Driver's License.*Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) Certification.*Broward County Certificate of Competency or State certification for related roadway construction.*Storm-water Certification.*FDOT Asphalt or Concrete Inspector Certification.*At least two (2) years of experience with asphalt, drainage, guardrails or concrete construction on roadways.*At least two (2) years of experience operating bulldozer, backhoe, front-end loader, skid-steer loader, gradall excavator, excavator.*At least two (2) years of experience in operating a vacuum truck or industrial street sweeper.*At least two (2) years of maintenance and repair experience with bridges.*At least two (2) years of experience of debris management under declared emergencies. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.Proficiently operates heavy duty construction equipment such bulldozer, backhoe, front-end loader, skid-steer loader, gradall excavator, excavator, vacuum truck or industrial street sweeper in roadway and bridge maintenance and repair; operates sweeper truck for cleaning roadways; operate earth moving equipment such as bulldozers and bobcats; operates tandem trucks in local hauling tasks; loads and unloads vehicles as required; safely transports construction equipment using a lowbed semi-trailer.Performs operator pre-checks on equipment; checks lubricants, cooling systems, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems; makes necessary minor adjustments and reports malfunctions to supervisor.Supervises labor crew with assigned tasks or acts as sub-foreman on landscape or construction jobs.Performs related work as assigned. WORK ENVIRONMENT Physical DemandsPhysical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, stretching, or lifting all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or exceptional skill, adeptness, and speed in the use of fingers, hands, or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy. Requires ability to climb onto large heavy equipment, such as dump truck and front-end loader, and safely operate such equipment on public roadways and rights-of-way. Requires ability to lift, carry and move construction-related materials and operate tools and equipment, such as concrete saw and jackhammer. Requires occasional strenuous physical labor in repairing roadways, sidewalks, and related improvements. Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment)Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.Involves routine and frequent exposure to traffic; moving machinery, loud noises and outdoor conditions.
